Autism and Naturopathic Medicine

As we learn more about the needs of autistic people, we can better support them to reach their health goals. Autism is a spectrum disorder where some autistic people share common traits. Regardless of a patient's neurotype, naturopathic medicine looks at the person as a whole to identify causes of symptoms, set goals, and treat the root cause.

Common traits among autistic people:

  • Less eye contact

  • Difficulty regulating tone of voice

  • Difficulty sharing interests or emotions

  • 'Stimming'-repetitive behaviors that can be helpful to process sensory input and relieve stress

  • Desire for a routine

Common health concerns seen in autistic people:

  • GI upset including constipation, abdominal pain, and reflux

    • One theory is that autistic people have altered gut flora that may make it more difficult to break down certain foods.

  • Anxiety

  • Difficulty sleeping

    • Alterations of melatonin production and breakdown have been found to be altered in some autistic people.

  • ADHD

How Naturopathic Medicine can help:

Whether a patient is neurodivergent or neurotypical, the approach of naturopathic medicine is the same, find the root cause and use the safest approach possible.

For GI concerns, testing can be done to assess for food intolerances and nutrient deficiencies that may be taxing the digestive system. Supplementing the diet with probiotic-rich foods or probiotic products can aid in building a healthier gut flora. Nutrient deficiencies are especially important to look for if the person's diet is restricted due to preference.

Anxiety can be addressed in many different ways including replenishing the system of nutrients that can alter our stress regulation, referral to a therapist, botanicals to promote relaxation, and acupressure or acupuncture.

Sleep difficulties can be addressed by supporting healthy melatonin production, assessing sleep hygiene, and supporting liver health.

Supporting the determinants of health is beneficial not just for autism, but for anyone who wants to improve their quality of life!
